About Vaastu Science / Vaastu Shastra - Introduction:

Vaastu/ Vastu Shastra is a part of Vedas, which are believed to be four to five thousand years old. The art of Vaastu originates in the Sthapatya Veda, a part of the Atharv Veda. Sthapatya Veda, dealing with the architecture. We can find many references in Vedas, Puranas and other subsequent literature.

Shelter is the one of the basic need of every living being. We build house for our living and to live a peaceful, happy and healthy life. A house or any building constructed as per Vaastu Shastra ensures maximum benefit to the habitant.

A structure built on a piece of land is known as "Vaastu" or "Vastu". It has been derived from the word "Vaas" which means "to live". It's practice started with Vedic period. Our ancient saints have concluded that anything living or non-living in the universe is made up of five basic elements or Panch Maha Bhoot.

Vaastu/ Vastu is directly related to these five elements

which are as follows:-

1. Prithvi (Earth)

2. Jal (Water)

3. Agni (Fire)

4. Vayu (Air)

5. Aakash (Space)

When these five elements are in harmony in our body, we are healthy and active and when their equilibrium is disturbed one is devitalized or unhealthy. Same is true with our place of living or work. Vaastu Shastra is the only science which instructs how to maintain best equilibrium of these five elements in a building and make best use of them to energize mental and physical energies of inhabitants to the maximum extent. In other words Vaastu tells us how to make use of these five elements for the maximum convenience, comfort and security keeping them in perfect harmony in our home or place of work so that one should enjoy health, wealth, prosperity and growth.

Vaastu helps us to align the energies of our house with that of the environment. It helps us to live in balance with nature.

Most people consult Vaastu Shastra only when they are in trouble or things are not going right. This attitude is incorrect.

Vaastu Shastra is applicable in different geographical areas around the world. Even where there is a limited amount of sunshine, the answer is yes. The basic principles of balancing the five elements apply throughout the world. By using the principles of this science, buildings can be designed to harmonize with the different climatic conditions of each region.

Importance of Vaastu Purush Mandala:

The God of structures, also known as - Vaastu Purush, provides protection, happiness and prosperity to its habitants if Vaastu/ Vastu principles are followed.

The Vaastu Purush Mandala is a specific type of mandala used in Vaastu Shastra. It is the metaphysical plan of a building / temple / site that incorporates the course of the heavenly bodies and supernatural forces.

The principal Gods / presiding deities of each direction are listed below:

Direction Ruling God / Deity:

North- West (Vayavya) Ruled by Lord of Winds.

North - Kubera Ruled by Lord of Wealth.

North - East (Eashan) Ruled by Lord of all quarters or Lord Shiva.

East - Ruled by God Sun - Aditya (Indra).

South - East (Agni) Ruled by Lord of Fire - Agni.

South - Yama Ruled by Lord of Death - Yama.

South - West (Nairutya) Pitru / Nairutya, Nairuthi- Ruled by ancestors.

West - Varuna Ruled by Lord of Water.

Centre - (Brahma) Ruled by Lord or Creator of the Universe.

The Vaastu Purush is the presiding deity of any site. Usually he is depicted as lying on it with the head in the North-East and the legs in the South-West.

The Vaastu Purush lies with his back up. The concept may be that the burden is carried on the back. It is a rule that pillars are not to be raised on the sensitive points of Vaastu Purush. The sensitive points according to the science of physics are inlets and outlets.

It is presumed that the Vaastu Purush would suffocate if inlets and outlets are blocked with pillars. The sensitive points exist also on the folds of the arms and legs. Pillars, if erected on those points, would not find enough base and support. Therefore, those points are to be avoided for pillars.

About Vaastu Science / Vaastu Shastra -Relation with Five Basic Elements:

We all agree that the whole universe is made up of five basic elements, the Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Our body is also made up of these five basic elements of nature also known as panch-mahabhootas.

The panch-mahabhootas are related to our five senses of smell, taste, hearing, touch and sight. Any imbalance in our external and internal Vaastu translates into unhappy situations. Vaastu teaches the individual to live in balance and harmony with the panch-mahabhootas.

Prithvi (Earth)

Human beings have a natural and emotional affinity with the Earth. The Earth revolves around the Sun and has gravitational and magnetic force. Scientists have proved that earth is a huge magnet with two poles-North pole and South pole.

It has also been proved that the human body is a 'magnetisable' object with a large percentage of iron in the blood. As we all know, opposite poles of a magnet attract each other and same magnetic poles repel each other. The Vastu principle of placing the head in South direction while sleeping is based on earth's magnetic property.

Jal (Water)

After earth, water is the most important element. It is linked to our senses of taste, touch, sight and hearing. It is quantitatively the largest of the five elements, as more than 80% of our body and two-third of earth's surface is water. Most ancient civilizations came up close to rivers and water sources.

Vastu provides important information about the placement of water sources like wells, boring, underground water tank, overhead water tank etc, while planning the house. Positions for drainage of water, septic tanks, sewerage, drains etc. are decided carefully to optimize the benefits of water element.

Agni (Fire)

Sun is the most vital source of energy and light. It is the soul of the universe. Fire element "SUN" is related to our sense of sound, touch and sight. It is difficult to imagine life on earth without Sun.

When the Sun rays combine with water, they get additional benefits. it is, therefore, recommended to have a water source in North-East direction.

To block North-East corner of your building is depriving yourself of most beneficial rays of Sun and has adverse results. The ultra-violet rays normalize the metabolism of the body.

The ancient ritual of "Surya Namaskaar" wherein the beneficial rays of Sun become more potent when seen through fresh water offered to Sun god.

The late afternoon and evening Sun with the harmful infrared rays should be avoided. It is recommended by Vastu to have tall and big trees in the South so that harmful rays of Sun are blocked.

Vayu (Air)

The Air or Vayu is vital for our survival. Our sense of sound, touch and feel are related to Air. The air on earth is a mixture of various gases like nitrogen, oxygen, helium, hydrogen etc.

Oxygen is vital for human beings and nitrogen is essential for the growth of plant life which in turn provides oxygen.

Vastu recommends proper placement of doors, windows, ventilators, balconies, height of structure and placement of trees and plants for balancing the Air element within the structure.

 Aakash (Space)

Vastu is the only body of thought that gives Space the status of a natural fundamental element. Vastu Shastra is, therefore, superior to any modern or traditional school of architecture in the world.

It is related to our sense of hearing, in a house, space element is related to the centre portion or the brahmasthan. It is important that brahmasthan be kept open and light. Any disturbances in the space element affects your growth.

Benefits of Vaastu / Vastu:

Vaastu Shastra benefits us in living a Healthy, Wealthy, Happy and Prosperous life. It provides us with immense cosmic energy . In other words Vaastu Shastra is the Key to Success in matters of Health, Wealth and Prosperity.

Those who live or work in Vaastu Compliant Places are generally happy with their surroundings and get maximum benefits from the Panch Maha Bhoot's which is abundance in nature by gravitational force , solar energy , lunar energy , spiritual energy and cosmic forces.

100% Vaastu Compliant building if not possible one should always try and make the interior arrangements accordingly and the habitant will benefit physically as well as mentally leading into a successful life.

What else will an individual wish other then peace of mind, health, success & prosperity in life. Vaastu Shastra promises it all in the form of Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. By following the Vaastu/ Vastu principles we can achieve everything we wish.

The Positive Energies of NATURE helps the inhabitants to establish themselves in this world and its usage minimizes the negativity surrounded upon the habitants and/or even the visitors.

North - East Direction:

The organs of Vaastu Purush are connected with construction of a building. As per the location of the particular organ of the body of Vaastu Purush the Eight Directions are given different importance.

The Head of Vaastu-Purush lies in the North-East (Eashan) Direction and is occupied by Mercury (Buddha) and Ruled by Lord Shiva. Accordingly, the place of conducting mental work and the worship chamber in a house is to be situated in that direction.

The head should be secure. Therefore, the North-East is should be kept free from heavy structures like pillars, etc.

While constructing one should therefore take care that there is enough ventilation in the North-East direction of the building. Toilet should never be constructed on the North-East. Yes, only a Bathing room can be constructed.

Keep the North-East corner of the Building always clean and pure. Always lightincense sticks here as North-East is the best direction to have a Worship place / Puja Room.

North - West Direction:

The North-West (Vayavya) direction is said to be Ruled by Vayudev. Organs like stomach, spleen and rectum of the Vaastu Purush are on that portion.

A spleen, according to the science of medicine, does the work of storing and restoring blood in a body. Herbs of medicine are recommended to be planted towards the North-West. The suggestion through this recommendation appears that the occupants should get the fragrance of herbs through the air.

The Room in the North-West direction is considered as second option to be used as a Bedroom after South-West. The North-West room is considered ideal for Guest Room. The store-room has been suggested towards that direction. Depression in North-West direction causes enmity and litigation. In the Factory / Industry the finished products are to be kept in the North-West corner. It would help quick movements of the stocks & early recovery thereof. Same can be applied for any shop.

Vaastu recommends North West corner of the house or building to be assigned to the toilet.

South - East Direction:

The South-East (Agni) direction is said to be occupied by the Moon and Devi Parvati. The moon is said to be the controller of mind and Parvati is the symbol of mother of mind.

Cooking room-Kitchen is to be in the South-East. As the positive rays of Sun in the morning enters in the South-East direction.

Never put mirror in the South-East direction.

While doing the interior works also avoid any water element in the South-East corner of the particular room or Kitchen.

Place a Red bulb in the South-East room if you are using it as a Bedroom.

South-East (Agni) corner can be used to affix Electrical Appliances and Main Switch Board in the Residence, Office , Factory and all such buildings.

South - West direction:

The South-West (Nairutya) direction is said to be occupied by Rahu and Kama or Cupid. So a bedroom should be situated in that direction. Rahu is said to be incomplete. Therefore, in order to bring completeness to life, this side must have been chosen for the purpose of marital life.

The Sun, also after the sunset in the sky is adjacent to the West direction, i.e. the South-West and the North-West are covered with bedrooms and store house.

South-West is Ruled by Pitru (ancestors) therefore, pictures of the ancestors can be placed on the South-West wall of the Living / Drawing Room.

The South-West direction should be heavier such that in high rise buildings a pent house should be planned in South-West direction on the terrace. In a Bungalow / Villa design the upper floor in such a way that the South-West direction is heavier then the North-East direction.

Septic tank should be placed in South West part of the Plot.

Tall Trees should be planted in South-West direction.

An underground water tank in South-West can be fatal to the head of the family or owner of the industry.

Vastu Resolutions:

Here are some of the resolutions which can be easily followed without making any major changes in the existing building:
